This is Martin. On a sunny afternoon he spent some time teaching me how to skateboard. I had never been on a skateboard and was actually pretty terrified. But try I did. While I may only have learned how to balance and just go straight forward on the board, I didn’t fall once. I am now pretty confident that this means I was definitely meant to skateboard. Maybe just not in public.

Martin doesn’t look very sure of my newly acquired skills.

After the lesson, Martin sat down and pointed out the parts to a skateboard. He also told me some of the most important things to remember and know when you are learning to skate. He even wrote them down for me. How nice!

Well, I am pretty sure that my skills will develop even more over time and a bit of confidence boosting and balance work in the grass. Don’t be surprised in a few weeks time if I end up in a video just like this. Just sayin’.

Creativity in skateboarding is endless because there is no governing body that declares what a skateboard should be in regards to parts and measurements. When the sport first started out, individuals focused mainly on the structure of a skateboard. But with the sport constantly growing in popularity, the overall design and image of a skateboard is crucial. There’s no such thing as a simple board anymore as design has been taken to the next level.

Most skateboard decks are constructed with a seven-ply cross-laminated layup of Canadian maple. But depending on an individual’s preference, other materials such as bamboo, Kevlar, carbon fiber and aluminum are also used. Ordinary decks are usually 7 to 10.5 inches wide, but vary depending on the type of skater. Vert skateboarders use a wide deck to provide stability while street skaters use a smaller version. The length of a skateboard deck is usually between 28 and 33 inches long.

I wrote this note because I'm totally in love, but do not think it's the same love as anyone else, this is love skater. If you knew what I feel ... good, but at least I'll try to make the attempt explain. I love her smile, her hair, her voice, her clothes, her style, her intelligence, her disposition, her tenderness, her kisses, etc.

When i see her, I feel happy & y know that something between us two it's going on. Forever & Ever i'm gonna love you, you must know that.

The Possibilities are Endless

Take a guess at who desinged these skateboard decks...it is not a leading skateboard company, or not even somebody who is associated with skateboarding at all. It is none other than British artist Damien Hirst, who came together with 'Supreme' to release a series of 3 Skateboard decks. Hirst, who is known for spin paintings and graphic spot paintings, has added this to all decks. I know Hirst is not known for his paintings, as we plainly witnessed for oursleves in class; but I thought this spin desing of paint worked marvelously with the theme of skateboarding.

This was a piece I did for my Vector Illustration class. A short series of board designs, using mostly my own logo: "The Jester."
I always wanted to design skateboards, snowboards, surf boards etc. When I first designed the Jester logo my initial intention for it was to be an extreme sport brand, much like quicksilver. Billabong and No Fear. So this would be my first swipe at going into that vision. The Jester itself as a logo, I think is a great story, I've been redesigning it, perfecting it, rebooting it, for about 6 - 7 years, and I think it has reached a point where its pretty final... Time will tell, I'll do a specific post about my logo later on, for now I hope you enjoy my decks.

Karen Jones out-shined defending champion Lyn-Z Adams Hawkins to take gold in the Women’s Skateboarding Vert contest at X Games 14.

“This is the thing I wanted the most,” Jones said. “It’s so stupid and I’m not supposed to like contests and care about it. I just sucked last year and the year before so I got obsessive about doing good on it.”

Jones edged out her competition by using a series of smaller technical tricks including a varial mute, a finger flip, and a lolli-pop shuv-it rather than depending on larger, more signature moves.

You want your feet on the board in more-or-less Ollie position, but with your back toes hanging off of the edge of the board, and your front foot back just a bit, like an inch or two.

You want to be up on the ball of your front foot before you go for the pop. It'll help.

For some reason, with 360 Pop Shove Its, it's strangely hard to explain exactly where you want your back foot to be. People often run into a bit of a wall with this part, and I think it's because everyone is a little different. You want your toes over the edge because when you pop the board up, you're going to want to scoop that edge of the board around to get it to spin. If you are having a hard time getting the board to spin the way you want it to, then the first thing you should change up would be the placement of your back foot. Just scoot it around a little. It's amazing what a difference an inch can make.

How to Kickflip

1. Before you learn how to kickflip, you’ll want to know how to ollie at least a foot, since you need some height for the trick.

2. You want to place your front foot at a 45 degree angle behind the front bolts. You should have the ball of you back foot in the center of the tail.

3. With your back foot, pop the board up as you would in an ollie. Instead of dragging straight up with your front foot, you want to give a nice ankle flick at where the concave starts.

4. Be sure to flick up and out, and not down. This will get the board flipping under you. Jump the same way as you would during an ollie and suck your feet up.

5. Stay over your skateboard. Wait for the griptape side to come round and be sure to suck up your legs to give it room to rotate.

6. When the board has flipped once, bring your front foot on it to catch it. Your back foot should naturally catch it as well.

7. Catch the board firmly, with both feet stomping on the bolts. Be careful not to land with one foot on the nose or tail, because your board might snap!

8. Ride away smoothly with a huge grin because you have just learned one of the hardest skateboarding tricks!

How to Kickflip Tips

1. Learning how to kickflip will take weeks and maybe even months of practice! Don’t get hung up if you can’t land them right away. Just keep trying kickflips and they will naturally come to you!

2. Don’t flick out too much with your ankle because this will cause the board to fly out.

3. Keep your shoulders square with the board so it stays straight and doesn’t rotate. This is a common problem of many beginners when they learn how to kickflip.

Step 1 - 50-50 Grind

The 50-50 is the most basic type of grind, and the first grind trick that most skateboarders learn.

What's a 50-50 Grind? A Grind is the name for sliding along an edge (such as a curb, bench, rail, coping, etc.) using your trucks instead of your wheels or deck (read more on what a grind is). A 50-50 Grind is where the edge or rail being ground is in the middle of the hangers on the trucks. The name "50-50" refers to being half on the edge and half off, with both trucks even.

You will need to know how to Ollie before learning how to 50-50 grind. Read How to Ollie, and get comfortable with your Ollies first. You will need to be good enough to land your Ollies flatly, and you will need to be able to land with your feet where you want them on your skateboard. If you are brand new to skateboarding, start with the basics (read Just Starting Out Skateboarding).

Skating: It's all mental

Ever wondered why you can ollie while rolling real fast but just can't ollie a ledge or stair set? Well, it's probably because you're scared.

The thing is, you just don't want to get hurt, no matter how much you want to land that trick! It's all in your head: there's no difference between ollieing 3 decks while moving and ollieing a 3 set (by the way, that's a good place to start).

You just need to make yourself do it. In that single moment before you make that ollie, you might feel this stab of fear in your chest. Even if you feel like you're going to fall, its always good to at least try to land the trick. You are going to fall, it's part of skating. So, if you're trying to ollie steps and you can't, its probably because you don't dare to do it. It's all mental, you just need to go for it!

And also, for your own safety, don't start out trying to ollie a 10 set. Please, you could hurt yourself, you'll look bad, and you don't know what kind of force you put on your feet in the landing process. This doesn't just go for ollieing steps or ledges, it goes for everything, from kickflips, to 360 flips, to even something as simple as an ollie, fear can always get in the way.

So, it's more than likely not that you're a bad skater, its just mental... so just skate

A hardflip is the combination of a kickflip and a pop shove it.

How to do hardflip?

Start with a kickflip position but with more angle and have your rear foot like a FS shove it position with your heel a little off the edge.
Flip the board like a kickflip and scoop the tail after you kick like the FS shove it motion.
Once the board finish the vertical flip and in position, stomp down to get the board.

How to skateboard for beginners

This site is created to help all who are interested in learning skateboard around the world that had the same problem with me when I first started. Are you frustrated when you see other skaters just land the trick so easily and you feel like it's impossible for you? At least, this is what I felt and I don't like it!

To start, just want to share some info about skateboarding first. Skateboarding is one of the sport where parents are not keen on their children to participate. However, it's good for individuals to be involved in this as it builds confidence through doing all the tricks(it takes a lot of guts to do it!). It also increases coordination and timing which is important in sport.

Anyway, don't want to go long into it. Just want to share some facts to encourage those who want to learn how to skateboard for beginners!

The skateboard was invented on the year 1967!!

It may be one of your toughest decision if you are just starting in skateboarding. First of all, there are online stores where you can buy skateboards.

There are so many different pricing on skateboards and a huge variety of skateboards around. Do you know that skateboards can be bought in parts(something like IKEA) compared to buying it completed too?

Normally, buying a complete skateboard will be cheaper and easier. Beginners should opt for this as you might not know how to assemble a skateboard together. Do note that you can't get all the best parts if you are buying a complete skateboard though.

Tips on how to choose a skateboard

Don't be cheap

Never get a cheap skateboard! These boards are mass produced with quality not being their main concern. You don't want to skim on your skateboard as it only makes skateboarding more dangerous.

Buy medium to pro grade skateboard

Yes! True skateboard companies actually spend a great deal of time trying to make their boards better, safer, and last longer so spend some money on your board. It may cost a little more but these skateboard will last a lot longer. From roughly $50 up to $120, you can get a medium to high quality skateboard which can last you for ages.

If you know how to assemble skateboard, here are some recommendations on skateboard parts:

Decks: Plan B, Element, Almost

Trucks: Venture, Silver or Royal

Wheels: Zoo York, Element, Flip, Girl

Bearings: Bone Swiss, Reds

How to do an ollie on a skateboard?

Ollie is the foundation of all skateboarding tricks and that have to be the first trick to learn. Once you are able to ollie, you'll be able to learn all kinds of other skateboarding tricks, such as grind or kickflip or even inventing your own skateboard tricks.

Stand with your rear foot on the tail and front foot at the middle of your board.
Place the ball of your rear foot in the mid of the board so that when you push the end down, you can feel the pressure.Place your front foot close to straight across the board.
Practice pushing down fast with you rear foot and put all your weight on the end.
If you want your board to keep going up once the tail is on the ground, push harder.
Hit the tail on the ground and jump with your rear foot as you slide you front foot on the board so that your knee get toward your chest
Get the side of your foot up to the board when you are jumping to cause the board to go up when you jump. Once both feet are in the air, the board will seem like sticking to your feet.

And now you know how to do an ollie on a skateboard! Keep training step 1-7 and you will master it in no time.

Get a helmet from reputable manufacturer such as Bell or Giro with Australian standard approved. Try all the helmets and choose the one that suits you the most with the design you like.

Knee/Elbow Pad

Knee and elbow pad will help you absorb the impact as well as prevent abrasions from sliding on the ground. I suggest getting a hard plastic caps as it offer the most impact and abrasion protection. Starters should start with thicker pads too.

Wrist Guard

Wrist injures are common skateboarding injuries based on statistics as it's natural to reach for the ground when you fall. Make sure your wrist guard have splints to absorb impact and reduce chances of injuries because it places a large impact forces and causes lots of injuries when falling.

We must learn to walk before we can run. There are a few fundamentals before we really start to learn the tricks such as:

Standing
Moving
Turning
Stopping

Standing

Start by trying to stand on a skateboard and try to jump too until you are comfortable. Next, balance only on the front or back wheels until you are used to the feel of your board.

Take note the position of your foot:

Regular stance(left foot front)

Goofy stance(right foot front)

Moving

To move, you have to learn to push the skateboard and get some momentum going. Go to a big empty space where there is no cars around. Put your front foot on top of the front wheel area and use your back foot to push the floor. Whenever you are slowing down, do give a soft push to keep going. Keep training until you are used to pushing.

Turning

Turning is really simple even though you are just learning how to ride a skateboard. All you have to do is to put your weight at the end of the board using your back foot and you will turn to the direction intended. Learn to put more weight on the skateboard so that you can turn more too.

Lean your upper body to the direction that you want to turn to enhance your turning. If you want a sharp turn, bend your knees and crouch as low as you can on your skateboard.

Stopping

The basic of stopping is foot breaking where you only have to put your back foot on the ground and drag it until you stop. Ensure that you keep practicing and don't hit the ground to hard so that you do not slip.

What is a kickflip?

A kickflip is basically just an ollie whereby your board spin underneath you while in the air. A perfect kickflip is when the you kick the board with the top-side of your front foot, the skateboard flips and spins over at least once and land on the skateboard comfortably.

How to do a kickflip on a skateboard?

Do take note that you will most probably get hurt while doing this trick. Do protect yourself by wearing all your pads and helmet. Make sure that you learn how to ollie perfectly before learning this.

Start by putting your feet like when you are doing an ollie
Now hit your tail like an ollie but drag your front foot up the board and drag it toward the side of the board with a flicking motion. You will have to flick faster to make faster flips.
Keep on top of the board while the board is flipping
Once the board flipped completely, let the board hit the back foot. Your front foot should not be too far behind in getting back on the board
Remember to land with your feet as close to the bolts as possible.

It will take a lot of timing and skill if you want to learn how to do a kickflip on a skateboard as there is not a way to teach on landing a perfect one. Everyone individual have their own personal ways of doing it and therefore, keep on practicing and you are bound to land a perfect kickflip.

How to do a heeflip?

Position yourself like doing an ollie and put your front foot s bit to the toe of your board so that the ball of you foot is about 3/4 of the edge. Your back foot should be placed so that the ball is in the middle of the tail.
Hit the tail like doing an ollie and put pressure on the ball of your front foot as you go up and kick outwards.

One of the old school basic tricks is the no comply. It's a trick where you put your front foot and do an ollie with nothing but only your rear foot.

Leave your front foot closed to the heel edge of the board just below the bottom screw of your truck.
Bend your knee and as you straighten your legs, push hard downwards and quickly on the tail with your back foot.
Kick your back foot backwards hard and kick your front foot forward at the same time.
Extend your front leg all the way outwards to give your board more spin and power. Tuck your back leg under you.
When the board has spin around 270 degrees, pull your legs back to their normal position.
Put your feet over the truck as the board finish spinning.
Roll away.

What is a calf wrap?

This one is extremely difficult to describe accurately, and right now I can't find any photos to reference. Basically, the calf wrap trick involves standing on one leg, with the other leg bent behind it and tucked into the back of your knee. The skateboard is held off the ground, clamped between the two legs.

How to calf wrap?

This position is achieved by doing a modified no comply.
Pop your board with your front foot at the edge of the lip.
When you jump, place your front foot on the ground and use your back foot to scoop the board behind your front knee and between your legs.

Railstand is one of the most popular tricks in skateboarding. It's where the skater pops an ollie and stop at the rail with the nose of the board.

Make sure that you are used to noseslide too as it is the best way to practice and get ready for a railstand. Go towards an edge and ollie with the nose of the board forward. Land with the nose and land when you feel that the board is falling.
Next, try to approach a rail and ollie just before reaching the rail. Lean your body inwards as the nose of the board go towards the rail.
Once the nose of the board get hold with the rail, shift your weight backwards to counteract the forward inertia and do a railstand.

What is a pop shove it?
Pop shove it is basically It is a trick where you ollie while your board spins 180 degrees. This consists of popping your skateboard and spin the back of your board to either left or right.

How to pop shove it?

Start with an ollie position with your front foot slightly further back than usual.
Hit your tail, but instead of pushing straight down and jumping straight up, push down and behind you with the ball of your foot.
Get your weight completely off the front foot so that there is nothing to stop the board from turning. Once you hit the tail and pushed down, the board should go into the air and start to turn under you.
Let the board hit your front foot when it is nearly as high as it can go.
Bring your back foot over and onto the board so your feet are on it like they would be at the peak of an ollie.

Practice the scooping motion with just your back foot while standing. With your front foot on the ground, stomp the tail of the board and guide it around 180 degrees. This will help you get the feel of the trick without worrying about falling.

If you've done all the steps right, you will land the pop shove it nicely. Work on popping the board more to get higher and try rolling faster so you get the hang of it.

Sean's in town! It's been really good to see him, and we all decided to drive out to Perryville to skate the Feltz park all day Saturday since it was so nice outside. It was super fun, and lots of sick skating went down. Bobby busted out of the gate with a monster hardflip over the hip, first try. Yeah Bob! Then he broke out his trusty Zip Zinger and shook things up a bit. He also got a buddy line with Bobby Taylor, but you'll have to wait to see the footage. Joe was feeling the good energy of the Bobs I think, and he threw down way too many tricks to list. He even got out of his shift at work just to come skate with us. Thanks Joe! The bank to ledge is soooooo nice, and so lots of great stuff went down on it by the likes of Joe, Drew, Larry, and Jack. Also Herbert's nollie front noseslide, which Jack deemed a face melter. Jake and David got some footage, but I unfortunately don't have any photos of them. Not to be out done, Sean threw down as well. He's got a job, and wife, and a kid, yet he still can flick perfect backside flip over the hip like "that." So think of him next time you're being lazy. Anyway, it was a great day and I'm glad everyone made it out. Thanks guys!
